About Chris Toews

Chris is a dedicated thinker, attorney, and advocate for meaningful change. Through his blog, he shares bold ideas and actionable solutions for tackling America’s toughest challenges.

Early Beginnings

Chris Toews was born on December 5, 1943, in Los Angeles, California.

Some years later, his family settled in Riverside, California, where his father, John, established a successful medical practice.

Education

After an undistinguished K-12 school career, Chris decided to take education seriously and enrolled at Riverside City College, where he graduated as valedictorian of his class.

He went on to earn a law degree at the University of Southern California, graduating with honors and serving on the Law Review.

Early Career & Peace Corps

After law school, Chris joined the Peace Corps, serving in Maracaibo, Venezuela, with his first wife, Barbara.

Upon his return, his first serious legal job was as an associate with the New York City firm Donovan Leisure Newton & Irvine.

After four years with the firm, he accepted an offer from Citibank to join its New York headquarters as a Vice President and tax attorney.

Career at Citibank

Chris remained with Citibank for over a decade, holding various financial and administrative positions.

Highlights of his career include:

- Serving as Group Controller for Citibank’s International Banking Group.
- Acting as Chief of Staff for the bank in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he lived with his family for over four years.

Return to California & Law Practice

In 1983, Chris resigned from Citibank to return to his native California. After passing the California bar exam, he worked for a local law firm in San Luis Obispo County.

In 1999, he established his own practice, which today is known as Toews Bio & Abram, a four-attorney firm specializing in:

- Estate Planning
- Business Law
- Tax Matters

Chris serves as the senior partner at the firm.

Recreation & Writing

When he’s not practicing law, Chris enjoys flying his Cirrus SR-22 and playing classic and jazz piano.

He is also passionate about writing essays on policy matters, many of which are published on this blog.
