Time to Leave?

Given the current dysfunctional state of national politics, leaving the Union could be a really good idea for California.  Under the electoral college system, California voters have nothing to say about who is elected President – in fact, Presidential candidates do not bother to visit California except to raise money they spend in the midwestern swing states that decide the election.

Californians also have little to say about what happens in Congress as they are massively under-represented in the Senate – 40 million Californians have the same number of Senators as half a million people in Wyoming. California is also massively under-represented in the House of Representatives, having 52 representatives rather than the 80 or so it would have if representation was proportional to its population.

Meanwhile, California subsidizes the rest of the country by paying more in taxes than it receives in Federal payments. As of 2022, Californians paid $692 billion in Federal taxes and got Federal payments of $609 billion, thus subsidizing the rest of the country by $83 billion per year.   On top of this, California is saddled with the world’s most inefficient health care system, a huge military establishment which has never passed an audit, and environmental policies which completely ignore the existential threat of climate change.

If the national government continues to evolve into a corrupt, Russian-style kleptocracy, which it appears to be doing, maybe we should do what Texas has claimed it should do – secede and start our own country.

Small Government

The post argues that the U.S. cannot sustain low taxes while funding major programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Defense. It calls for accepting higher taxes to support essential government services, as cuts to smaller programs alone won't balance the budget.
